The parish of St. Augustine was formally established in 1783. The church was opened in 1827 and the priest was Fr. William Hogarth. The church was extended by him in 1865, while he was the first bishop of Hexham and Newcastle.

The church is the focus for a large worshipping community and has recently been reordered, using the skills of Fenwick Lawson. The church is involved in many activities and a welcome booklet is available from the presbytery.
